Wellness Policy
Davis Stuart Inc. (DS) utilizes a holistic approach to the care and healing of the residents we serve. We are committed to providing an environment that promotes and protects our residents’ physical and mental health and well-being. Key to that approach is the provision of nutritional foods, physical activity opportunities and therapeutic groups to encourage a healthy mind and body. The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and the Food Service Manager shall ensure that these standards are met.
Public Involvement:

DS is a private residential facility for teens, therefore there is no public involvement.

Nutrition Education:

DS is not a school or a school district, therefore curriculum standards are not relevant.
Nutrition Standards, Guidelines and Marketing:

Breakfast, lunch and afterschool snack shall meet or exceed federal, state and local requirements and shall be accessible to all residents at the facility.

The USDA Professional Standards for State and Local Nutrition Programs will be followed to ensure professional development in the area of food and nutrition is provided for food service directors, managers and staff.

DS has a ServSafe certified food service manager.

Qualified food service professionals shall provide all residents access to a variety of nutritious and appealing foods that meet their health and nutrition needs.

The dining facility shall be safe, comfortable and pleasing. Ample time and space shall be allowed for eating meals. Residents shall have a minimum of 20 minutes to consume their meal after obtaining their food.

Water will be available during meals. Water is always available to the residents at our facility throughout the day.

Foods and beverages are not sold to the residents at our facility.
Nutrition Education and Promotion:

DS promotes healthy nutrition education with signage, use of creative menus and posters.

DS promotes healthy food items including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products. We also provide a salad bar when possible during lunch.

DS residents will have access to hand-washing facilities prior to meals.
Physical Activity:

DS provides recreational activities 3-5 times per week. These activities include swimming and kayaking in the summer, biking, hiking, volleyball, basketball, touch football, softball and disc golf. We have a weight room with various types of exercise equipment in our gymnasium that is accessible to our residents.

DS staff will be encouraged to model healthy behaviors healthy eating and physical activity. To the extent feasible, staff shall model healthy behaviors for residents, including healthy eating/drinking and physical activity.
Mental Health:

DS offers various groups on a six week rotation for our residents. These groups include Teen Safety Matters, Managing Behaviors, Healthy Relationships and Substance Awareness. Therapists are available to all our residents.
Wellness Team:

SLT members and Food Service Manager comprise the wellness team. This teams includes the Executive Director, Director of Operations, Director of Human Resources and Director of Administration and Food Service Manager.
DS will complete triennial reviews of the wellness policy to determine compliance and update the policy as needed.
