EQUINE ASSISTED THERAPY PROGRAM
Davis Stuart is the only residential treatment facility in West Virginia to offer Equine Assisted Therapy.
This worthwhile program is solely funded through grants and contributions.
WHAT IS EQUINE ASSISTED THERAPY?
Licensed therapist, Carol Lewis leads our Equine Assisted Therapy Program where teens are taught proper feeding, grooming, horse handling techniques, and learn to identify the basic parts of the horse. Teens also learn the history of the horse and how to perform specific maneuvers.
As the program develops with each child, and reliable horses are available, teens learn basic horseback riding skills, as well.
Equine Assisted Therapy is incredibly beneficial, unfortunately, many don't understand its value. The program is a great equalizer and has a very calming effect and helps to establish reality for many residents. It gives teens the tools needed to overcome obstacles, problem-solving situations, and teaches them to think of others. These skills aid residents in being successful once they leave they leave our care.
